Germany's sunniest city is also Europe's most beautiful
When the world's largest travel guide publisher chooses the most beautiful cities in the world, it has a certain significance. In 2022, Auckland, Taipei and - Freiburg were on the podium! Of course they were happy about it in the southern Black Forest, but not really surprised. They are used to praise here. Freiburg has been winning another title for years: Germany's warmest and sunniest city. To be more precise: 1,760 hours of sunshine per year, an average of seven degrees more than the rest of the country. We think so: It's time for a visit to the city ...
The Gothic cathedral towers over the city of 230,000 inhabitants with the "most beautiful tower in Christendom", a proud 116 metres high. Surrounding the church, which is well worth seeing, is the unique old town with its half-timbered houses, narrow humpbacked alleyways and ubiquitous little streams, known as "Bächle" in Baden. Wine taverns in the inner courtyards, cosy street cafés, small shops - just strolling around Freiburg is sightseeing enough. Thanks to its 32,000 students, the city is diverse, young and endearing. People like to party here, and enjoy good food and drink too.
As if that wasn't enough: few large cities have such marvellous surroundings. Markgräflerland, the Rhine plain and Alsace on one side, nature, forest and Black Forest peaks on the other. One of them is 1,284 metres high and Freiburg's local mountain. In 1930, they built a cable car up to the Schauinsland. You have to experience and enjoy it, then you'll know why the mountain is rightly called that. Back down in the city, you can shop, stroll and eat tarte flambée to your heart's content.
Your hotel is the renowned Fini-Resort in Badenweiler, 38 kilometres to the south. The KONUS card is included. With this card you can travel free of charge by bus and train to Freiburg, where you can also use all trams free of charge. Line 2 and bus 21 take you from the city centre to the valley station of the Schauinsland cable car in 25 minutes. We add the ascent and descent to the Schauinsland to the Spar mit! package. And when you check in at the hotel, we'll give you a wonderful little book called "Glücksorte in Freiburg", freshly published in 2024.
